"G" - Gothic

Long before the Goths, there was Gothic. I got my first introduction to this peculiar word through Du Maurier's "Rebecca." I was really young when I read it, so much so that I can't even remember how it ended.

Even the first line is brooding and dark: "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderly again." How evocative is that?

But it didn't end there. Mom was a huge "Dark Shadows" fan, and I watched it with her as a little girl. (In retrospect, that could explain a LOT.)

I'm even a fan of gothic architecture. How cool are those gargoyle downspouts? What kind of imagination did someone have to have to visualize something like that? Wow.

Anyone else out there familiar those gothic guardians?

Love Rebecca both book and film. Must read it again soon. Happy A to Z.

Thanks, Maggie. You've just motivated me enough to pick it up, too. Happy A to Z.
